Travel safety tips: how to avoid scams anywhere

Eight simple habits that protect your money and your trip.

These habits prevent most of the problems that travelers report to WarnPack, in any country.

Always pay in local currency

When a card terminal or ATM offers to convert the amount into your home currency (dynamic currency conversion), decline it. The rate is almost always worse.

Agree the price before you start

Taxi, tuk-tuk, boat, guide, massage, scooter: ask for the total price and what it includes, and repeat it back.

Photograph everything you rent

Film a slow walk-around of any bike, car, jet ski or equipment before you use it. Never hand over your passport as a deposit.

Be wary of unsolicited help

A stranger who tells you a place is closed, a road is blocked or a price is "special for tourists" usually has a commission to earn.

Use ATMs inside bank branches

Standalone machines are more likely to be tampered with. Cover the keypad and turn on instant card alerts.

Check official sources yourself

Visa, entry-fee and tax pages should be typed in, not reached through an ad. Check that the address ends with the official government domain.

Carry small notes

Without change, a small purchase becomes a large tip.

Share what you learn

If you are targeted, post it to WarnPack, so the next traveler is ready.
